The Completed Corvus Corvidae
Here’s the completed Concept Art for Corvus Corvidae and my idea behind him.
The Corvidae are an offspring from the Hawkshead Nebulae. Around shifting paths of Two Suns a vast planetoid favoured within the boon of it’s gravity multiple moons. Each moon habited by a vast selection of Avian humanoids divided into tribes.
The Corvidae are Seekers, they journey across the winds of space seeking riches and most importantly the rewards of knowledge. Corvus uses a holographic emitter to change his appearance upon first investigation of different species.
For this reason, any hasty transformation from hologram to his true form has started the seeds of a tale regarding a Were-Raven that travels through space. Corvus is an opportunist with a hunger for information, new technologies and the taste of a good story. Physically Corvidae are quite muscular, possessing great upper body strength. Their bones however are hollow meaning that Corvidae rely more on position and speed in a fight than brute force.
Corvus utilises nanite micro-surgery woven into his dermal feathers for camoflage, defence and close-quarters attack as the hard-light holographic field can be used to deceive, shield and cut opponents. Corvidae sciences have developed along alchemical and quite esoteric lines of investigation allowing it to strongly associated with magic. On more obvious lines of attack, the silver pistol Corvus uses fires long-range focused particle beams from between the curved talon-like blades along the barrel of the gun. Corvus has begun the path of his greatest flight, a dangerous journey that will take him across a thousand suns and beyond.
Corvus is my entry for the ‘Legacy of a Thousand Suns’ – ‘Design a Boss’ competition, the image is at 72dpi drawn in pen and pencil the coloured in photoshop.
Corvus Corvidae : Were-Raven Cosmonaut
Corvus is a work in progress for an online competition I spotted recently. The browser game ‘League of a Thousand Suns’ has a creative competition for all of it’s players. I hope to have it completed to my satisfaction and submitted ahead of deadline in between a busy work schedule.
Wish me luck!

Do these Poster Designs show signs of “Spelling Error” Marketing?
There’s been a recent backlash against some poorly designed movie posters for the forthcoming X-Men movie First Class (as found on Collider.com) Upon seeing the posters I had to agree that they looked pretty damn lacklustre, but by all means judge for yourself…
Even using these elements there are a lot of ways to do better…
So the question is: Why deliberately release these?
I think it may be an excellent case of “Spelling Error” marketing. By using images that will deliberately incite comment, criticism or even outright scorn you gain attention.
After all, a minute is a long time on the internet so the bigger the reaction the more likely you’re going to be mentioned. It’s a difficult if not impossible thing to prove, but it is sure to incite attention. The alternate posters featured on impawards.com are much better designs but won’t generate the same level of coverage.
I think it was an XKCD strip gave me the idea for the term, two bloggers post off against each other to see who can reach 200 comments first. The second blogger nails it by putting a spelling error in the title. The scary question is whether it’s good marketing or not, because if you deliberately produce poor design and content does anybody win?
BTW if anyone had found a link to the strip I mentioned can they post it in a comment? It’s maddening to know that it’s out there somewhere in the web, taunting me with my own amusement.

A few links for those who wish to dabble in their creative side and blend the line between fashion and personal costume. The Sneaker design section drew the most of my attention but it would be cool to make a wedding dress out of 1960′s romance comic covers. Heh, ‘Bride of Lichenstein’.
Congratulations and kudos – AGDA Poster Finalists
Congratulations to Sarah Wright-Smith for making it into the finals of the AGDA Poster Annual Exhibition, and much kudos to my fellow creatives for their submissions too – Artisan http://www.getartisan.com.au ran a great brainstorming session which gave us a chance to write, brainstorm, review and discuss design over a few slices of pizza – nice work everyone!
